My birds are going great guns, the males have started displaying and some of the hens as well, lol. The hens dont seem interested in laying for a while yet. No screaming here yet, but I am looking forward to it so it wont be a problem. Cant wait to start with some little babies this year, I have decided to set the eggs under broody hens first and then move them into the incubator 3 days before hatching time. this way I get a natural start to incubation and I can get the humidity right in the incubator.

Hi
i notice that you are after Buff guineas, a mate of mine had some a few years back, he had a lot of problems with them. They had red eyes and really couldnt see that well, needed to be kept in low light conditions.
Fertility also wasnt that good with them, 5 hatch out of nearly 350 eggs. He thought that the problem with that was due to the birds not being ble to see that well and therefore not being able to mate properly. He has since gotten rid of his stock and everyone that asks about them he advises against. He is also an experienced breeder, nearly 40 years with ground birds

Cheers

Hello,

New to this forum but just wanted to say that air freight to and from WA is not pressurised so can have a bad impact on eggs coming that way. Try to get a friend to carry them as hand luggage or use road freight for best results. I have tried interstate eggs with very poor results where friends on the eastern seaboard don't have a problem with airfreight.

Just my 2c worth.

Ginny

Hi Ginny,
Your 2cts worth is well put. I have never had much luck with eggs sent via air and placed in a cargo hold --- as you say carry as hand luggage if possible or road freight.

By the way welcome to the forum -- what birds do you keep?.

Regards,

Snowball :-D :-D :-D

Hello Snowball and thankyou for the welcome.

I am hoping that carrying eggs as handluggage will work as I have family coming over to WA in June and I'm hoping to get some Silver Grey Dorking eggs that way all being well.

I have Australorps and silkies in the chook yard with a couple of New Hampshires of my daughter's. Then the guinea fowl are semi wild. I only have three of those here at my new house but down at the sheds there are about 30 or so, mostly bachelors as the foxes take hens sitting on the nest before I find them.

I have just bought an IM 35auto incubator which I have successfully hatch 12 guinea keets which I robbed from under the mother before the foxes got her. She was sitting on 27 but the rest died at various stages in the shell, probably because she couldn't cover them all and had been sitting for over 2 weeks when I found her. I also tried Light Sussex of my neighbours and hatched 33 from 36 eggs so I am very happy with my new toy. Am looking for a trio of peafowl as I have no machinery or sheds here for them to sit on which has been my main restraint before I moved (we collect and use our rainwater). I keep telling hubby they won't fly up to the house roof as there are lots of trees around the house for them to roost on instead but it is an ongoing arguement.

So that is my little flock at present.

Ginny

Hi Ginny,
Thanks for reply. Glad to hear you are an Australorp fan -- I have them plus Rhode Island Reds and I'm breeding up Speckled Sussex. Don't have guinea fowl but do Peafowl both normals and whites and I have Mandarin Ducks.

Good to see you are doing well with the incubator, I run two 144 eggs multiplo's --- did OK this last season. If you can get your Dorking eggs to you and in your incubator within 7 to 14 days of laying, and carried as hand luggage I think you will stand a good chance -- good luck anyhow.

Send in some pic's of your birds to the photo comp, you never know you could win -- good prizes, plus we all can see your birds.

All the best,regards,
Snowball :-D :-D :-D

Hi again Snowball,

Are the Muliplo same as E3 Multiquip? I used one of those for hatching ostriches and they were great. Auto everything and great success with the ostrich eggs. Easy to hatch, harder to rear. It was a loan and I couldn't afford the $$ to buy both the incubator and the hatcher so gave it back when I'd had a go. Lovely incubator though.
