Poultry Matters wrote: Gallus wrote: provenance? please explain Provenance is the place or source of origin of the stock. Like the history of the bloodline. So is the provenance known and verified? Where does the bloodline originate from? Which farm is it sourced from and/or who is the producer? For example, according to the Australorp Club Of Australia "Barter & Sons probably has the oldest original commercial purebred layer strain in Australia". Barter & Sons Hatchery was established in 1933 and has always been focused on breeding traditional laying breeds. Their farm is located at 35 Felton St. Horsley Park NSW 2175 but previously it was at located at Eaton Rd. Luddenham. The desire to understand poultry provenance is likely to be the next big development or trend in restaurant sustainability. Bushpig claims to have a 95 year old strain of Rhode Island Red. So @bushpig, can you tell us about the origins of the bloodline? Are they a prolific egg-laying strain, as one would expect? Can you post pics? It'd be interesting to see what they look like compared to other bloodlines like Barter and Sons, commercial heritage/traditional bloodline that I keep and breed. |

Its actually 97 years give or take a month I believe and the provenance originated in Rhode Island USA from my great grandfather passed down over the almost century as prolific egg layers they still are today. Can post pic's but they just look like regular RIR and I guess you have seen those before? |

Thanks very much for your reply with provenance and photos Bushpig. It's great that your family has kept the bloodline pure for almost a century! This is a relatively rare thing, certainly going back that far. The photo you posted of the dark (maroon) hen is a fine looking specimen, and looks a bit different to modern strains, which is not surprising. I like the look of it, as it has fine form and colour. Good to hear your stock hear I'd like to get some of your stock, however I don't have Private Messages enabled (as it's not available to members with a low post count), so I have no way of contacting you apart from on the open forum. Can you please provide some way of contacting you? |
