Well, it is now the middle of November and this time last year I had baby chicks out of the incubator and both captive hens were laying eggs all over the place.
This year, so far, not one egg.....
Is it just me, or is it the weather that is affecting the breeding..?
It has been a much "better" spring at home than last year.
We have had plenty of rain and everything is reasonably green, but the birds won't breed.
Plenty of calling by the males and plenty of displaying...........but no nesting.
Anyone got any ideas :?: :?: :?:

Hi Buggsy, Sounds like your Peahens have not "Cycled" yet and will be late breeders. Have there wings dropped? this is a good sign if a hen has commenced her "Cycle" another is the hen should not move to far away or show signs of nervousness when the Peacock is displaying. Sounds like conditions there are good and there's not much you can do but wait!

We have found over the years, some Peahens will vary their "cycle" from year to year, this year for example almost all of our Peahens have laid, infact we have over 40 chicks. Yet this time last year we only had 29 with only a few Peahens laying.

Thanks

Hi PA thanks for the response.
It's funny you should talk about the "dropped wings".
I hadn't read that that was a precursor to laying.
My wife noticed last year that one of my hens was wandering around with dropped wings and commented that she might be getting ready to lay.
She is doing the same thing at the moment (the peahen not my wife....(hopefully) so maybe the free ranging hens will set and lay.
I will keep an eye on the others.
Thanks.
