Well, after much time, effort, blood, sweat and swears, I have almost finished my new peafowl enclosure. Poor beasties have been suffering in a temp. enclosure, can't wait to move them into the large new pen, hopefully Saturday morning (figuring if I get up before dawn it will be the easiest time to move them? - can catch 'em whilst they're sleeping, then they enter the new pen and have all day adjusting before bedtime).

My question is, at what height should I put the nest boxes? I know they like to perch up high, but I'm thinking that if (when!) we get some babies, if the nest boxes are up too high, then that would put the chicks at risk of injury. But would the hen be happy if they were on the ground?

peafowl naturally breed on the ground in the wild they never breed up a tree so its best to have them boxes on or close to the ground. If you must have them off the ground I would not go more than 1 meter because if a chick falls out it may not get back

Thanks PSH, putting them on the ground would be easier for me anyway, so that's where they'll be.

You can use a ramp if you want them off the ground that works ok

On the ground or a couple of inches off is best for ALL ground birds ;)

Or screw them to the back wall 1 or 2 inches off the ground so they are secure and strong remember they are a big fowl and can knock the box over

I've got mine up on pallets and find that it works perfectly for airflow and cleaning. I put a flattened cardboard box to cover any gaps topped with straw. Simple to remove and replace for cleaning.
