After reading all the great advice about peafowl, 3 days ago my 5 new peafowl escaped (my own fault), only had them 11 days. That day they hung around the house, then they went AWOL for 24 hours, I could hear an occasional honk every now and then from them.

24 hours later they decided they had enough of hiding in the bushes and returned. Now I find them under their new favourite tree not far from the back door. so to keep them here I feed them their fav treats.

This is day 3 and still a bit nervous they will disappear, but they seem quite content with their new living arrangement.

Also some say peas are unlucky, but if these ones didn't escape we would have found our first baby alpaca frozen to death the next morning. As we were looking for them when we discovered a new baby on the farm, so I will be forever thankful to our 5 loveable larakin escapees.

But be careful as I don't recommend it due to the stress level. Take the advice found on the forum.

Deb :)

if you can get them back into the pen it wold be best. then once or twice a week let them out for the day to reduce them wondering off too far and getting lost because they don't know there surroundings at the back of their heads yet ;) but, i hope they like their new homes :-D

They won't even go near the pen, they just laze around the house in som calistomon trees. When they come there in the morning i reward them with their fav treats and they seem happy with that.

It wasn't the ideal way to have things happen, but so far they seem like part of the furniture around here.

Day 11 now, and the peas are now sleeping in the highest tree near the house, and spend their days peeking endlessly though the windows and Zeus is forever displaying around the backyard. He dances for everyone that goes into the yard, including the dog and myself

Maybe being freerange birds before I purchased them helped a little, I must also say the guinea fowls are no longer the top of the pecking order around here. So they have knocked them down a peg or two.

Like I said, I really don't recommend this way of having them out of the pen due to the stress level, and for anyone getting peafowl I would greatly advice that you go to the PeacocksAustralia website and read carefully about purchasing Peafowl as I was merely one very lucky person.
