We have been given three peacocks/hens.

We have spent the weekend making a peacock Taj Mahal. All fully enclosed and protected. Installed water and feed containers and are fully prepared to house them for over 6 months. As they are 5 years old we are crossing fingers that they will breed whilst in lock down.

Exxcited is barely describing the emotions here tonight as we wait for the hour to arrive when we can go and pick up our new family members.

We have installed half a tree in the enclosure. Chainsawed it down and dug and cemented it in. So it looks awesome and hopefully will be great for them.

Having never had peacocks before I have read all the posts here and have bought some cat biscuits specially for them. Have chook food already for the chooks and geese.

When people say greens what exactly are they meaning?

Can you feed them lettuce. I ask only because we were advised years ago not to give lettuce to birds as it gives the scours. Do I have to chop up cabbage abd broccolli etc?

Hi Sandie!

I'm only new to peafowl too. I pick a handful or so of fresh grass each day and throw to mine (making sure I pick short, soft bits so they can swallow it without choking as once you pick it they can't really break it up themselves). They also enjoy spinach leaves - I just put whole leaves in and the peacocks manage to shred them into manageable pieces.

Deb :-D

Thanks for the help. They have arrived and are blue in colour. They are housed in an inescapeable pen and so far are going great.

Will try them on some sultanas today. Have put some potted plants on the outside of their pen so they can nibble some of the leaves. I will pick a bit of grass for them today.

When I figure out how to post pictures I will do so.

Another question.

What do they nest in. Do I just put hay in their pen or do they need a nesting box with hay?

Note: Feed the cat biscuits dry, do not soak them as valuable trace elements will be lost.

When people say greens what exactly are they meaning?

Green Peafowl (Pavo muticus) Java Green Peafowl is prodominantly what most people will refer to but there are three subspecies: (P. m. muticus) native to Malaysia and Java, (P. m. spicifer) from northeastern India & northwestern Myanmar and (P. m. imperator) found in Indo-China. You can view Photos on our Web Site at: http://www.peacocksaustralia.com/peafow ... index.html or in the Forum Photo Gallery at: http://paforumphotogallery.com/thumbnails.php?album=5

Yes you can and should feed them chopped Lettuce as it’s an excellent source of Foliate and yes chopped Cabbage, Broccoli, and Silver beet, are also recommended two to three time a week.

Hope this helps, look forward to some Photos of your new additions to the family.

Thanks
P.A
