Hello,

I have been reading responses on your forum and it appears there are some very knowledgeable peafowl owners here. I am new to your forum and new to peafowl.

I have posed this question on other forums but have received very little input. My wife and I are looking at getting a few peachicks in October. They will be about four months old. Our intention is to keep them penned in a small fenced area (15x15 feet) for a month or so and then to a larger fenced (30x30 feet) for a somewhat longer period, and eventually let them roam. We live on 2 acres which is fenced, about 1/3 of acre in chain link. Is it realistic to think they would stay within the fencing? The lady we are getting them from said we could clip a wing to keep them from flying. I know this would make them more vulnerable to predators but is this feasible?

Thanks you.

Doug

Hi Doug,

I am no expert myself but I guess it depends on what type and how many predators you have around.

I thinks PA ( peacocks australia) would be able to help you better.

I do have 5 Peafowl here but we are on 33 acres and they stick fairly close to the house yard as this is where the treats come from.

Hello Doug! Welcome to the forum.

I have two young peafowl on 2 acres, but we only have normal farm fencing and I wouldn't be game to let ours roam free here. Our neighbours are the 2-acres-of-spotless-lawn type, and as peafowl can do a bit of damage to gardens (and cars) I wouldn't dare let ours out. There is also the danger of neighbourhood dogs and cars.

Ours live in an enclosure that measures about 8m x 8m plus a shed that is about 2m x 3m. At its highest point the pen is about 2.4m high, and it is all covered with indoor cricket netting.

I'm sure someone else on here can advise on the effectiveness of wing clipping. I did think about that here but as our fences are only about 3ft high they will just hop over them anyway.

Good luck with them.

Deb :-D

Hi Doug. I honestly reckon 2 acres is not enough unless you keep them penned and you also have VERY understanding neighbours, for all the reasons mentioned and a lot more. I have an article in Australasian Poultry, the one with the white peacock on the front, which may help you. My phone number is in it and if you ring the mobile I am happy to ring you back on your landline and chat. I am also wondering why they are 4 months old as the mating season is only beginning but perhaps you are in Qu. Yours, Pam

Thank you all for the replys. I was afraid I may not be able to let them roam. We currently have them penned in a small area and I guess I may have to build a larger enclosure.

The reason for the difference in breeding season is that we live in the US. Oregon to be exact.

Thanks again.

Local Govt have rules about keeping noisy animals and birds, mainly in towns and suburbs. The main thing here is we are not allowed to import eggs or adults so we can't get the colour mutations you guys get. We have to wait for a mutation to appear. Cheers, Pam
