We have our very first peacock egg this morning. Bit late in the season I think. But I am excited anyhow.

The female has not started sitting on it yet. She sits just near it though.

How long for a peacock egg to hatch and how many average does she lay?

Thanks in advance for help.

Turn???

Doesn't the peahen do all that.

Lord love us. I have mental images of me trying to do this.

LOL. I figure you are talking about incubator incubation. I have possibly used the wrong term.

So I am taking it she will sit for 27-29 days and then hopefully I will have little peacocks running about.

Will she wait until she has a sizable clutch before commencing the sit?

Make sure you tell the peahen when to stop turning.

And don't forget to remind her to turn the humidity up then, too.

Hi Sandie, actually its technically the start of the season so its likely to be the first egg from your Peahen and she won't commence incubation (sitting on the egg/s) until she has laid the full round 6-12 eggs is normal depending on age. Peahens can sit for 31-32 days depending on the weather, the warmer it is the less incubation time. You can collect the eggs and use a hen (chicken) to incubate the egg/s such as a Silkie or Pekin don't put more than 4 eggs under a Bantam 3 is better for rotation.

Good luck with your Peafowl and please let us know how they go.

Thanks
P.A

Thanks for all the info.

So far she seems to be laying one egg every two days. She has not commenced sitting yet.

As they are in an enclosure do I or should I provide hay or straw or the like for her. She has just made a well in the dry dirt.

Is there any special feed to give them during this anxious time, (anxious for me)

I have been feeding them, chook grain, cat biscuits, a few sultanas, some bread when it is available, (home made bread), I also through in some garden stuff such as silver beet.

With the chook grains they appear to be only eating the corn and the sunflower seeds from it.

I have given them corn on the cob. Raw and unbuttered of course. They absolutely went bonkers for it.

Have planted heaps so I can keep giving it to them.

Can they live on only sunflower and corn? They don't appear to be interested in the other grains in the chook mix.

Oh maybe they are just to well fed with too much variety?

One anxious mum here. I don't want to stuff it up.
