I have had my pied peacock and peahen locked up for the past 9 weeks since purchasing them from a local breeder. The male will be 2 years old this coming December and the female is 4 yrs old. My research here says that mature birds should be locked up for 3-6 months if purchased near to or during mating season. Should I let them out prior to Spring or would it be OK to let them out in another month or 2?

The breeder suggested we should let the peahen out first and then let the peacock out a few weeks later, but I think this might stress both birds??

My question is, should we let them out during winter or wait until after Spring?

9 weeks is way to soon at that age 6 months is the minimum or you risk them flying off

I had a peacock once and I made a big mistake and let him out after a month as I was told by the seller and less than 2 minutes latter he was gone never heard or saw him again. If I ever get another he will stay caged for the 6 months or maybe even longer. Watch out for people telling you its ok to let them go too soon they obviously don't give a dam about birds

Thanks for the reply's. We feel guilty leaving them locked up as their enclosure is not huge, but we want these birds to stay on our property so we will follow the advice here and leave them locked up until after spring.

We sit in the enclosure with them most days when we change their food to get them used to us, so this will have to do for now.

We stayed with the names of the previous peacocks that were living on the property before we moved in, Paul and Rosie.

I kept my white pieds in for 12 months and they were great when they came out so relaxed and calm so I recommend the longest time the better
