hello to all peafowl lovers.
I moved to tassie 2 years ago from rockhampton. We always wanted peafowl up there but the dingoes and foxes were a real threat. We now have one blue male and 2 hens. They are not behaving like I thought peacocks would and spend their days following me around the yard. If I am in the front of the house they sit out under the windows and if I move to the back of the house(where the kitchen is) they gravitate back to this area and wait for me to emerge with treats. when we got them I only locked them up for 3 weeks and I started a feeding campaign that would keep them around the house. This seems to have worked so well that now I am having threats from my children that I have to choose between them or the pooping peacocks. Of cause the peacocks are winning so far.
The male has no sign of a tail yet is there something wrong with him? He is only young. They have a weakness for cat biscuits and know that the biscuit dispenser is aound the corner in the back room. So far they have not tried to roost on rafters in the sheds (we have had them for 6 months now.)These ones are free ranging and at present roost in a dense gum tree near the house. If it is raining they do get under the shed and roost on machinery.

Dear Kandie
In regard to tail(Or more correctly, tail covert) length there are others probably much more qualified than me to respond.
In relation to my young male, in the first year he only had a few greenish brown wispy feathers in his train.
In the second year he grew some slightly longer ones with a few "eyes" thrown in.
In this his third year, he has a proper train, but it is only about 2/3 the length of the older cocks tail.
So I think you will have to wait a year or so to see the train start to come.
Others are free to correct me....

Kandie, ----- Be patient your young male will over the next couple of years mature into something truely beautiful that when he display's and rattles his tail you will know that it was worth while waiting for. I never cease to be amazed at their displays.

Why did you ever leave Queensland -- shame on you. :!: :!:

Good luck with your peacocks,regards,
Snowball :D :D :D
