Post subject:  peafowl in the snow

Recently we had a once in 20 year snow event here in southern Tassie.
It was so gorgeous to see our peafowl walking around the garden with fresh snow on their backs and lots of cute 3 toe tracks across the garden.
They seemed to enjoy plucking at the snowflakes on my plants and were quite content during the snow flurries. They did roost in the shed when it got too wet and wild but would emerge happily for a cat biscuit snack from me.

Sounds great, don't think we will ever see snow here (Tropics) sounds like the Peacocks & Peafowl didn't mind the Cold? just keep an eye on them in Very cold weather as they prefer the warmer climate.

Thanks

I have read some interesting info from America regarding the roosting of peafowl in really cold climates.
They suggest wide flat perches rather than round ones so that the birds can crouch down over their feet at night to keep their toes warm.
They say that people who provide round perches sometimes get toe losses to frostbite cos the birds can't keep them warm.
Otherwise they seem to take the cold weather pretty well.

Mind you we get some strong winds at our place and last year my free range cock bird (with his full train) got blown out of his roosting tree in the middle of the night, on more than one occasion.
Poor little bugger.

Kandie,
I go along with Buggsy re the perches--- I'm in the tropics --- I have some perches that are natural tree branches that go from approx 8cm to 12cm in diameter, but I also have timber perches which are 15cm x 7.5cm and I have noticed that during our winter up here which are not severe, the birds perch on the flat timber perches and lay over their feet to keep them warm. During the summer months they seem to roost mainly on the tree branches.

Welcome to the forum :D :D .Regards,
Snowball.
