Has anyone experience a runt within their chicks this season???? I have one mother hen who had 2 chicks one is DOUBLE the size now at 6 weeks old and the little runt we call "sparrow" receives plenty of food but just is slow growing…. He is not sick just slow growing! I have attached a picture so you can see the difference between the two hatchlings

I get the odd white peachick that this happens and I believe its cause by lack of nutrition at birth from the yolk sac. I feel they do not use all the yolk at hatch and it has a big affect in the first 4-6 weeks. I have also found many [not all] will die sooner or later as they are weaker and more susceptible to diseases ect... |

Ok Thanks- I hope "sparrow" doesn't die - he was slightly smaller when they both were hatched! I was thinking maybe he would die early on- but he seems to be getting heaps of food and sting- but genetically speaking yes weaker in the yolk sack! THANKS! |

I agree with TP its a nutrition issue but not after birth. Its hard to correct and it may never fully develop and yes 50/50 if it will survive but that said many have so |

Its a % of 50/50 if it will reach full maturity but well worth trying |

Is that caused by the parents not getting good food? I was told that for cats and if their kittens were runts is not enough vitamins and minerals |

I think that is one cause but it could be a few things |
