Thanks PeaGoddess, fantastic advice, all of it. I knew I had to keep them locked up for 3 months (much to the chagrin of the menfolk here) but think I'll err on the side of caution & go for 6 months lock-up.

Oh my gawd if you're seeing 2 male chicks, add "Dad" and the "Fodder Store Ring-In", I'm in deep doggy doo. Now need to find some more hens, or, as "He Who Must Never Be Obeyed" will say, sell some cocks. Methinks I'll put a call out for some young hens ;)

Its a minimum 6 months for adult peafowl (as per the peabible) not 3 months

Thanks again Sparky - hmm, I must've confused the number of months with adult Guinea Fowl confinement.

On the subject of them, I was incredibly lucky that a plan I hatched worked. I bought a mix of 10 various colours, almost adult Guineas from 3 different sellers. It was completely impractical to keep them locked up for 3 months so, after 3 weeks, I let one out, then a couple of days later another, then a couple of days later a couple. Without exception they all hung around, pacing up and down their former pen. Interestingly, the second they were out of the pen they immediately started eating the grain I'd thrown about for the rest of the poultry without a care in the world.

Within a few days I had them all out and they've settled perfectly to the point they've integrated with everyone and everything, following me like puppies. Locals are amazed at the way my entire poultry flock behave & interact with me, and have called me the "Chook Whisperer" saying they've never seen anything quite like it.

I must admit, I'm contemplating taking the same route with the Peafowl by letting a young 'un out every couple of days until they're settled and then the adults. I have a vast collection of weird & wonderful free-ranging poultry from teeny, weeny Seabrights to massive Sussex teens to a flock of geese with an I/Runner who refuses to join the other 4 IR's, and a lot of others besides, and they all get on famously with absolutely no dramas. I figure if they're happy, content & well fed they'll stick around. I'm a tad phobic about any animals being locked up, so that's my motivation.
