I was in Warwick yesterday for the Pig and Calf sales among other reasons( visiting family)
The sales are always busier in holiday periods, but the offerings are much increased. Once you get away from the emotional purchases of Mums and kids, you can get some real bargains. I've come to know the regular vendor numbers and some of the regular buyers, so you can have a conversation with those offering stock and find out why.
I managed to pick up a Platinum Sussex pullet, a Buff Orpington pullet, two brown Leghorn bantam pullets, a brown Leghorn bantam hen with 5 chicks, and a white Call drake, and Mallard drake. i passed up on a gold laced Wyandotte hen that went for $9 because the vendor couldn't tell me how old she was.
As a bonus, i picked up two red eyed cinnamon guinea fowl that I hadn't seen before. $ 15/pr
A pen of 6 mixed colour sheep, and 5 friesian cross bully calves will help keep the grass down and fill our freezer til christmas. I took home what i could in the trailer, having to go back with a truck last night to collect the four legged surprise purchases with correct paperwork to cross the border.
Everything is now in quarantine, i even had to make up a new pen in the front paddock for the extra poultry out of rusty old chainwire and corro, with a dozen star picketsand no.8 wire to hold it all together. Curse you cyclone Iris for this wind!
I must exercise more restraint in the near future, I have far too much stock in quarantine and I now need to construct more pens for the mallard and any other i may buy in the future.
Cheers,
Andrew
