I didn't know chickens could vomit

Yes, maybe google for videos on this. I saw a very good one earlier in the week. Unsure of the link now. I was desperate to find all the info when I first noticed her sick, so did not save such things, just kept searching for what might be answers to help my sick hen.

Hi, hope Florence's health has improved today.

Here is a thread to vomiting hens.

viewtopic.php?f=32&t=9170&hilit=hens+vomiting

Birds do gag and they do vomit.

Have little change I would think.
But I think I figure a way of getting the clean maggots down ALIVE, so they can eat away any material stuck in her crop. In a blob of yoghurt, I concealed about 10x clean maggots (I got them in a punnet (about 100) yesterday for $8.50 from a local fishing store. I read on another site, they store them in bran in the punnets, to keep them clean, mostly from their own output. And I learned you keep the lid on until you need them and store them in the fridge so they hibernate otherwise they die or mature into big flys or whatever their genes determine! Only serve them when they are immediately going to be consumed. Lest they crawl away over the edge of the dish etc ) Because of their wriggling nature I reakoned the yoghurt would slow them, and hide them, and since Florence eats yoghurt well, this was likely going to work.

However, she to one look and did not stir more than a couple peaks.

So I quickly learned how to be tough-love and with thanks to the warming, calming sun on her back as I nursed her, she let me open her mouth and gave her all those live maggots in yoghurt.
Just praying that those maggots are hungry fiesty beasts of things and devour all the rubbish in her crop. And she survives and lives a good strong life until old age takes her in her sleep one night.

I have read of very good reports on the maggot method. Some say it takes 48hrs for improvement, others 4-5days and a brighter chicken arises.
Personally although she was/is still very unwell. Her crop was a little less this morning, so I am thinking maybe one of those maggots from yesterdays serving did some work over night.
Quite a few poops in her bedding, still soft, (so is the food I am trying to feed her). Healthy colour though. I would expect this esp if the material in the crop that was blocking the exit point, has diminishes, and/or been dislodged with my massaging yesterday too.

Due to a really dirty vent area because she sits to sleep, so she scored a warm bum-bath when the sun came out today. Much to her disgust.

I did contact a retired vet who I met in the first church community I was with when I moved this side of town. He did not give me a good report back. I will not rely only on this SINCE he did not set eyes on her - leaving town in two day for serverl weeks, so no time.

If any improvement in the next 24-48hrs I will continue, if not then the sour crop could be secondary to something more complex, he suspects. And better to cull her.
