LIGHT SUSSEX LOSING FEATHERS

HI THERE,

I HAVE A WHITE SUSSEX HEN WHOSE FEATHERS ARE LOOKING A LITTEL TATTY BECAUSE OF THE AMOROUS ADVANCES OF THE ROO THAT IS PENNED UP WITH HER AND OTHER GIRLS. SHE HAS NO FEATHERS ON HER BACK AND DOWN HER BUM.

JUST WONDERING WHAT CAN I GIVE HER TO HELP HER FEATHERS RETURN. SHE IS NOT MOLTING. LIKE THE REST OF MY CHOOKS, SHE IS GIVEN A POULTRY VITAMIN SUPPLEMENT AND PROBIOTIC WEEKLY AND HAS APPLE CIDER VINEGAR WITH GARLIC IN HER WATER EACH DAY. ALL OF MY CHOOKS ARE ALSO WORMED REGULARLY. SHE WAS SUCH A LOVELY LOOKING BIRD. THANKS GUYS. [smilie=a_doh.gif]

I used a molting aid that I purchased from the pet shop for canaries and it worked or at least helped

What is a moulting aid? (Serious question)

Couldn't you just save your money and pluck the chicken? :shock:

Moulting Aid is a specific product manufactured by Vetafarm for moulting birds.
It is basically a vitamin, mineral and amino acid supplement. The amino acids are important during feather growth.
If you are already using a vitamin and mineral supplement, then you can try adding some protein to help feather growth eg meat products, eggs, soy protein or even cat/dog biscuits.

Maybe your rooster just needs more hens?

Mr. Rooster was having his way with The Pretty One even whilst she was broody and nesting as Boss Chookie was also broody and he had no one else; her back was bald, her comb pecked by him and she went into moult when the chicks hatched she was so stressed by him :shock:

Definitely extra protein supplements and more hens for your rooster.

Thanks parvo, I was imagining the moulting aid was to assist in the shedding/moulting of the feathers, not the regrowth. It makes more sense now.
