After years of wanting some Wyandottes hens I finally have two black lace and one blue lace. Yesterday I noticed one of the black lace girls was walking odd. One leg is at a funny angle. She was fine till yesterday. She is eating and doesn't appear ill, she can put weight on the leg, so its not broken.
I am wondering if she has a dislocation, maybe from catching her leg on a vine or maybe from jumping of the perch.
Has anyone any idea what the problem is and is their anything I can do to help her recover.

Hi 4chicks

If she has a leg injury then you need to reduce the mount of movement she does.

Just like any animal with an injury you need to keep her in a confined area so her leg doesn't get damaged any further and has time o rest and recuperate.

I would suggest keeping her in a sick bay for week and reassess her condition at the end of the week.

Thanks Chicka -dee I have sick bayed her. I am wondering if maybe I should try and straighten the bent leg somehow.Or do you think it is best left alone. It seems to be coming from the hock (
I think that is what it is called) the knee in humans.
It is like she is bandy and she treads on her other foot.

No worries 4Chicks [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

I wouldn't try to straighten it. th_Noooo.gif You may hurt her worse. If you don't know what is wrong, then you may just cause more damage. I would just see how's she goes over the week (with very little movement) & reassess her at the end of the week.

I would say she was most likely like that to start with (bandy), which is probably why the breeder (or person who sold her to you) got rid of her. It's not unusual for some breeders to pass off unwanted stock to the unsuspecting. That's first hand knowledge talking & as you read more on this forum, seems to be more the norm than the exception, unfortunately.

I would love a Wyandotte (standard) as they are really pretty birds, but there aren't any available around where I am. Any chance you can post a picy of your girls? The photo you posted is too small & when I try to zoom or enlarge it, it is all blurry so couldnt get a real god look at your girls leg.

What are their names? Maybe you could put their names in one of the other posts we have going on at the moment.

Keep us posted with how she's going.

I have only had them a week today. I did not notice anything wrong with her leg till Thursday. I did meet the person who breed then and have his phone number.
As for names I am thinking they will be called Dot, Lace & Lavender!

Theyre so pretty! :o

Sometimes it does take a few days to notice these things. The euphoria of finally getting the new babies you've wanted for years, reveling in how pretty they are, wondering if their housing is sufficient, making sure they're feeding okay...all takes time & until all that initial stuff is out of the way, it is understandable that you may not notice if something was wrong with her.

It may be worth a call to the breeder to see what they suggest. If you choose not to, just keep her penned up in your chooks sick bay & see how she goes.

She may have just jumped off something and landed funny. Very possible scenario too.

I will wait and see what happens. I do believe its caused by either jumping off the perch or getting tangled. Maybe I should look into adding calcium to her diet as I read a similiar problem in another post where a vet recommended minerals.
If I send her back she may be pts so she stays, she is very quiet and used to being handled. I have added another platform to the roosts so when she is back in the hen house she doesnt have so far to jump.

Good choice 4Chicks th_clap.gif

I believe in dealing with the hand you are delt too, and making the most of what you have.

That is wonderful that you are accomodating for her potential special need.

They truly are very pretty birds. Very jealous.

You sound like a wonderful carer.

Cheers
