After reading Chicka-Dee's recent post and also being advised not to use Vaseline but KY jelly as a lubricant for examining chooks, I was wondering whether Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly could still be used for topical treatment of scaly leg mites and on combs to prevent/treat frost bite or should it just be avoided for internal use or in general not used at all?

Thank you for your anticipated enlightenment.

H &H,

Next time you feel the urge to digitally inspect your hens cloaca, you may find KY Jelly or other water-soluble gel softer to use than vaseline :)

Chicka-Dee wrote:
My neighbor who is an Ag teacher uses Olive oil if she doesn't have a proper lubricant available, as it is a natural product and will not agrivate a wound the way Vasaline will. The thing about Vasaline is that it use to be called Petroleum Jelly, but bad press made manufacturers change its name to something less controversial. Vasaline (Petrolium Jelly) is a bottom base grade Petrolium (like the petrol you put in your car) product that should not be used internally at all. In fact it has been banned in several countries in the world as it has been linked to kidney cancer.

So if you care for your girl (and I know you do, as you are seeking help from others to help her) then you will not place Vasaline into her internal parts. th_Noooo.gif

Cheers

Hi H&H,

Using Vaseline on legs and combs is fine.
It is just not recommended for internal use or on feathered areas.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I now wonder about all those human babies who's bottoms were smeared with Vaseline...

I was warned not to use baby powder on my kids, it apparently may cause testicular/ovarian cancer...
