This probably has more to do with our health and wellbeing than the chooks! We have a problem with mosquitoes around the chookhouse. When we put the chooks to bed in the evening we are attacked by literally hundreds of mozzies! I'm not sure why they are there, there is no water around (the chooks' water is covered). Would appreciate any ideas on how to get rid of them, but obviously it needs to be safe for the chooks. Does anyone know of any plants that we could grow there that would deter them?

It's the humid weather in Victoria, the heavy rains and the heat.

We have Lavender growing near the chook coops. I also use a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil mixed with water in a small hand garden sprayer and spray around the coops.

Or you can get a frog!

Lavender, Lemon Thyme, and Citronella plants planted near the coops.

Here is a mosquito website:

You can get some hurricane lanterns and fill with Citronella oil and light them.Keep them going day and night. One lantern will cover about 3 metres.Hung them low as the fumes go up.Usually under a perch where they sit of a night.Make sure you have good ventilation and the lamp is hung securely.

This probably won't help and probably won't be healthy to the chooks: but I have a chook who eats mozzies , she literally stands in the cage on a rainy night eating the mozzies happily, maybe you could find a chook who'd like to eat them, being from FNQLD we have mozzies crawling out of our ears, it's a treat when you can get something to eat them... :)

Hi there
I do my pens once a week (complete clean out Ie; remove straw under roosts, disinfect perches, spray walls and floors and replace straw and deep litter under perches.
But before I replace deep litter bedding I sprinkle flea powder and or vegetable dust and before I do that I use the pressure pump filled with around 50% water, around 20 to 30% bleach and around 20% citronella oil (The citronella is great for keeping bugs away).
Shake it up whilst spraying and I find it gets rid of flies, and any other critters.....
Make sure you do all the walls and keep your babies and birdies out untill it dries.
Works for me........
And I bleach out the waterer's twice a week.... [smilie=a_cookiemonster.gif]

Do you think the mothball hangers would help keep the mozzies away in the roost as that is where most are hiding out I have read they are safe for pets but not sure how affective they are on mozzies?

Hi Pollar welcome2.gif

I do not think they would be effective as they are meant for moths, but you could try planting some citronella plants around your coop if you think the girls are being given a hard time by the mozzies at night.

Cheers
