Greetings;

One of our birds has tapeworm. I normally would not bother too much about this, however, the bird appears a little listless and has lost her appetite. Therefore, I thought it best to eliminate some of the possible causes.

I bought from pet store 23 ml of Avitrol Plus (Praziquantel).

Is this OK to give via syringe directly to the bird ?

If the chicken weighs roughly 3 KG is 8.3 ML OK to give orally via syringe?

Do you recommend direct application to the bird or placing in drinking water ?

Advice please. Thanks, CG

Hi CG

I would definitely give her a dose direct to beak. I don't have the bottle so I'm unsure of what the dosage rate is but nearly half the bottle sounds extreme for one chook. i would mix it with the water & then give it to her direct to beak, but give it to the whole flock in their water if she has been with the rest of the flock, as well [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

Remember their crop is anatomically to their right so spurt the syringe towards her right side otherwise you'll may cause her to aspirate if you send it down the wrong pipe.

Cheers

Thank you. I must admit I get nervous squirting liquid down the beak.

I have 5 birds and they flock together, so it maybe best to opt for the drinking water option. At least then they all have a little. I also feel that the volume calculated for one bird seems very high, CG

Yes to the beak if you don't know what you doing with the syringe you can accidently inject air and that can kill

Just remember Avitrol Plus Syrup or Avitrol Plus Tablets are not licenced for use in chickens because the residual time for meat and egg is not known
