as youve seen ive had a few posts on here, one for a sick pekin, and one for a frizzle with a sore leg/foot. Someone has suggested my pekin , who once was perfectly fine, could have mareks. So i have read up on the mareks and ricketts. and they are both very similar, i still am not sure what she has, but now im wandering if its mareks, well then maybe this is what the frizzle has too. is there any sure way of telling if mrs pekin has ricketts or mareks. cause id hate to get rid of her and frizzle if its curable. Both are eating fine and drinking fine, infact mrs pekin has increased her appetite, she constantly eats and drinks more than ever, its just when she decides to move she stresses out and gets all fumbled, and falls to the side or face first, and her legs go everywhere( i didnt know chickens were so flexible with there legs till ive watched her) . The problem here is not only am i and my daughter gettin very attached, but i have baby silkies whom are 4wks old, and other chickens to think about, i would hate for them to get this mareks.

Hi Cammochick, As you have read, both Mareks & Ricketts have very similar clinical symptoms so it is difficult to be precise and the only way to be sure is through Veterinarian examination or postmortem. Having said that birds suffering from Mareks will generally not eat or drink through loss of appetite, they may also show other symptoms such as poor eye sight or blindness and difficulty breathing. Birds suffering from deficiencies (Rickets) will generally appear healthy from the hips up, with no other cynical symptoms. They generally appear normal and have a good appetite, alert appearance, normal droppings, ECT..

Do any other birds show any symptoms?

Are you able to take her to a Vet experienced in Poultry? This will not help her but will help confirm if Mareks is present. If not and as you know there is no curer for Mareks, so assuming you still have her isolated, you can continue with Vitamin supplement assuming it’s Ricketts.

Note: It’s very important to wash you hands and any implement that may come in contact with her, Humans and equipment can transmit Mareks Disease and many others.

Sorry we can’t give you a defining answer.

P.s unfortunately even with Photos or Video it wouldn’t help with a diagnosis.

Thanks
P.A

thankyou for your reply, she is very alert, when i walk in she will start talking to us, cheeping away, her droppings are normal now the cocci is gone, she eats more than ever at the moment , almost like a little garbage disposal , and she drinks loads , all this she does on her own. Her vision appears fine. No other birds except possible the frizzle (but that could just be a broken foot) so no other signs , i have them both isolated as i have 6 silkie chicks 4weeks old , 2 adult silkies, 3 pullets(hoping) and the last black pekin, they all seem fine. In my other area i have 12 red island reds and some black things , they are perfect , except for i inherited two older chickens who have ugly scaly legs .
For now i think i will hold hope and keep them on vitamin d and see how they improve.

Hi Cammochick, Scaly legs can be treated very simply, just coat the affected birds legs with Vaseline, do this twice a week for 2 weeks this will kill the Mites and eggs. We use a Liquid insecticide & Vaseline mixed but just Vaseline will do.

Thanks
P.A

will the vaseline work on chickens that have been effected by the mites for a couple of years?

Hi Tahir, yes but you may want to add a liquid insecticide to penetrate the old layers.

Thanks

Hi Everyone I was in two minds as to whether I should add to this as it started out about Mareks and Ricketts but really wanted to add ,,,, their is a great product called " Lucas Paw Paw Ointment " it does the same thing as vaseline but also helps with the healing process , if the scale is very old you will need to rub it in very regularly , as the worse it is the longer the healing process will take , you can buy it from woolies or the chemist and it is good stuff to have on hand I have used it on combs , legs and hens backs that have been deeply scratched and think it is grate , hope this helps someone Ian .
