wave.gif I recently dosed my chooks with Avitrol Plus and need to re-worm them again in a fortnight. Just wondering if I have to stick to Avitrol Plus again or can I use another wormer such as Killverm, which I eventually will use alternately with Big L?

Also, can I worm my Pekin Bantams with these wormers or is there a special wormer for Bantams?

Thanks

Hi Chook Lassie,

Avitrol plus, Kilverm and BigL all have the same active drug- levamisole- so there is no point rotating between the 3 (Avitrol Plus also contains a tapewormer-praziquantel). Pick one from this group.
If you want to rotate you need to chose a wormer of a different group. For bantams you can use Wormout Tablets which contain oxfendazole and praziquantel. Alternatively you can use Moxidectin Plus, which contains moxidectin (a drug from yet another group of drugs, the ivermectins) and praziquantel. However, be aware that this drug is not registered for use in poultry, but has been used safely in all types of birds.

Therefore, whichever drug you chose to use in 2 weeks doesn't really matter, but it is a good idea to occasionally rotate between different groups of drugs to minimise the risk of resistance occuring to the medications.

Thanks Parvo for the info.

As for my Pekin Bantams I was unsure if I should worm them with the wormers as mentioned. I will now get a wormer tablets just for Bantams.By the way, have you any tips on how to give 10 Pekins of various age the wormer tablets? I want to ensure that each gets the correct dose. I'm thinking that I may have to crush the recommended tablet dose and put it in some tit bit and give it to each bird? Time consuming, so would appreciate another method that will ensure they get the correct dose.

There is no easy way, unless you know of a treat that they all come running for and in which you can hide the tablet.
Otherwise you need to grab each bird, open its beak and push the tablet(s) in! Great fun!!
That's why most use in-water medication- easier to do but less reliable in ensuring that each bird gets the correct dose.

I have just bought some Avitrol Plus to worm our two chookies. It says you shouldn't feed them for 24 hours prior to worming. For one thing, they will be very cranky chookies if they don't get fed for a day, and for another thing, they free range in our backyard all day, so it would be impossible to stop them eating altogether unless I shut them up all day. I can't really do that as our older chook would beat up our new (14 week old) chickie if they were shut up together all day, it is a pretty small pen. Is it really that important that they don't eat prior to worming? Also, does this apply to all wormers or just Avitrol?

Hi Elle jay,

The food-withholding issue is because some birds may regurgitate after being medicated.
It really isn't that important and I would dose them anyway, but if you can dose them first thing in the morning before they've had their grain/pellet feed then that may be the best approach.

You will need to check with each specific wormer whether food should be withheld. Generally, you will only see it with medications which are given direct to the beak/crop rather than medications administered in drinking water

Thanks Parvo, early morning worming sounds like the best approach.

Just wondering why you would need to worm them again so soon, I thought 4 times a year was sufficient?
