Bugger.

We bought half a dozen new little Australorps ranging in age from approx. seven to nine weeks old last week.

Putting them into the tractor this morning I noticed a large amount of small, thin red worms in one of the droppings (all dead)

I'm guessing Gapeworm or Gizzard worm.

I'll get some photo's and post up.

Anyone successfully treated either ?

thanks.

Ivermectin should treat both of them. I would be dosing them anyway regardless of whether the worms were dead or not. Make sure you do the follow up dose and regularly change your wormers. Obviously you will have to treat any other chickens which have come in contact with these newbies.

Are you sure its worms and not cocci??
At that age they are very young to be wormed

Can bacteria arrange themselves in clumps and strings ?

What potential problems with worming younguns ?
How young is too young ?

Horses and stock we know what to do, Poultry are pretty new to us, we've only had our old girls two years so are still on a very steep learning curve.

I was about to add some Nilverm to their water, should I hold off ?

OK, here's a slightly shaky piccy.

More a mass this morning, less string like.

I would treat for cocci first I still am not 100% sure it is worms from the photo. And after the cocci treatment worm them.
You dont really need to worm chickens till they are about 3 months and yes yours are nearly there I know :)
The weather lately has been a nightmare so that is why I tend more to cocci .
Can you ring the person you got them off and ask if they had been wormed because you made coment the things were dead this would only occur if they had been treated. :)

Also have a look under "Health Knowledge Base" at the top of the Poultry Health & Wellbeing section.
About 1/2 way down you will see a post "Worming your Poultry"

Thanks everyone.
I'm finding it a little hard to look for things without a search function (although I should probably just google the forum)

SWMBO is at work ATM and has the number of the breeder.
I believe they are 'vaccinated' which I took as being for things including coccidiosis as it's so common, but we'll find out later.

They all look and are running around OK ATM (I hope, I've just walked in for lunch)

Actually having another look at the photo it looks to be intestinal lining in the photo which is an indication of cooci.
But its only an opinion based on a photo :)

Thanks again everyone, we've treated tonight and will continue tomorrow for cocci.

Luckily my sister had Baycox as she's a rabbit breeder as no one in town (less than 1000) had anything.
