Once you have fixed this does it come back again or is the fix permanent

I have a hen that I think has this but she is old and if its not permanent then I wonder if its worth it for her?

Years ago I had a hen I adored (she was my first ever) and she unfortunately suffered from this. The vet operated and removed the obstruction, a ball of grass, however as the grass had started to ferment and ruined the lining of her crop and hence she died.

Chookies really break your heart at times.

You need to differentiate crop impaction from crop stasis.

Crop impaction is where the crop outlet is blocked with a ball of grass or some foreign matter. Once the obstruction is relieved, then it shouldn't recur as long as the bird doesn't have access to the problem material.

Crop stasis on the other hand is just where the crop fails to empty. Food and water just sit there & start to ferment.
This is caused by something which affects the motility of the crop or the entire gut and is usually quite severe. Causes can vary from generalised illnesses, heavy metal poisoning to specific diseases which affect the nerves that supply the crop or gut eg Mareks Disease.

In these cases merely emptying the crop will not solve the problem if the underlying problem is still there.

As for the video clip, I don't see how it shows crop impaction. It just shows head/neck weaving. Where is the swollen crop? Where is the regurgitation/vomiting? This bird may have an impacted crop but the video doesn't really show this.

No problem guys. That's what forums are about-sharing information; we all have something to contribute.

Loo Loo, I just reread my post and realise it seems a bit harsh about the video.

No offence intended, and good on you for posting it. I just wanted to point out to those less familiar with crop issues may want to be aware that the video didn't necessarily show all the features you would see with a bird suffering from crop problems.
