im getting ready for breeding season and my birds are full of lice, grrrr. so i have just been outside cleaning out all of there pens (using water) and once its dry im going to powder them all and the chooks and also some lime, i have also been told that a sheep drench will kill off the lice so im going to use that again (although i used it on some of them only a mounth ago so should i use it again?), i also think those sparrows have been bring lice in, too. what do you guys find works for lice problems?

Hi, Beccy wave.gif ,

Sorry to read about your mite/lice problem. Some one I knew had a similar problem and used the below product to disinfect their chook pens.

F10SC VETERINARY DISINFECTANT

F10 is not suitable if you are trying to rid your pens of lice. It is for removing germs-viruses, bacteria & fungi, not parasites.

You will need to spray the pen with Coopex or Cislin- both are very effective.

If you are going to dust all the birds then do them all at the same time & repeat the dusting in 2-3 weeks.

Which sheep drench are you using? If it ivermectin or moxidectin based then this will work well for mites but not so well for lice.

Hi, Beccy wave.gif ,

We have wormwood and lavender planted around the coops, and dried wormwood and lavender inside the nesting box. I also use Apple Cider Vinegar in the girl's water.

You could try Diatomaceous Earth...

The problem BB is that bird lice tend not to feed on blood so systemic insecticides given orally tend not to work.
Mites on the other hand are blood feeders so there's no problem there.

That's interesting. What do they do then, as in, how do they affect the chooks?
