With Spring around the corner, what would be the best disinfectant to clean out the chook coop and also an unused chook coop previously inhabited?

Also would you need to use Ag. Lime on the ground of both coops? Is Ag. Lime OK to use for the coop that the chooks currently reside in?

All advice appreciated.

I use a weak mix of bleach and water and leave it for 2 or 3 days to air out, works a treat. Yes AG lime ONLY and mix it in the soil a little

I cleaned out my nest boxes today, the first time since late February. They were cleared, swept out and then added a layer of diamataceous earth, some Pestene and then fresh straw.

I dusted down their perches with Pestene as well. Their roost area gets cleaned out daily as It's easy to do by design.

I always put some AG lime into their run as it acts as a cleaner and freshening agent.

The only thing I'd add is as follows.

Did the empty coop that previously housed birds come from someone else's place or is it one of your own?

The reason I ask is that if that coop has an unknown history I would spray it out with a strong disinfectant such as VirkonS or F10 to kill any potential viruses which still may be lurking, rather than risk infecting the birds you put in there.

If you decide to do this then follow the directions on the packet- don't just make up an unmeasured mix or else it may not work as you want it to.

parvo for your advice, I really appreciate it.

The empty coop is a large Aframe that last housed the Lavender Gang; I was thinking of getting my dad a couple of chookies for Father's Day

but it still needs a roof and a couple of other renovations, it's been really wet and we haven't been able to do much at all outside.
