Sensitive, yep. Adventurous for sure, ingenious even Hen and Hobbits. Today Lucky has worked out how to shovel layers pellets out of the 6" deep plastic honey tub suspended from under the roosting box, using the side of her head, and is having a great time with it while the others are scratching on the clover patch the tractor is sitting on. Back to the drawing board with feeder designs...

Today's eggs count - 3 very hard-shelled eggs from the four. Lucy laid her usual perfect dark brown egg in the nesting box. Lucky laid her lighter brown egg in the nest with some whitish calcium smears on the end of it. Brownie laid her brown egg on the roosting box floor as usual with some white calcium spots on the end. Earlybird who laid *two* normal eggs yesterday is having a rest. Looks like it was Brownie and Lucky with yesterday's soft-shell problems. Hopefully back to normal now. They're certainly all much more relaxed today, and as a result, so am I.

Off to get the shellgrit now and thanks for all the help.

Yes thanks, I've seen those and was considering getting a plumbing off-cut and caps to make one similar. It's a bit long to hang from under the nest box in the tractor (18" clearance) to make sure food stays dry, and raise high enough to keep out mice. Today I've found today a 3 litre round plastic container with lid ($1) and a large 3" deep plastic dog bowl ($2.50). I'll try cutting holes near the bottom of the round container and Aralditing it in the middle of the dog bowl. That would leave about 2 inches space between to peck for feed, so should be harder to flick out, and it would hold a few days pellets rather than me filling every day like now. For $3.50, I'll give it a go. The designs of different feeders are amazing, and it's good to try making new things.

No worries PP. I've made a simple hanging waterer out of recycled bits today, tried it on the chooklers and it works well. So I'll finish the feeder tomorrow and put them both in the Poultry Housing > Recycled ideas section. Don't expect too much - these are just experimental things that may not last long or may need modifications.

I was reading with stubble and brown quail need very high protein so crushed up some cat biscuits and they like that but would that be enough?
