Hi all,
My Girl first started showing signs last week that she was unwell. I brought her inside and she came good, so she went back out to the pen, then Friday morning she slowly wobbled out of the pen last and I brought her back inside. Her crop is very small and feels like its made of playdough, her poos have been dark green and runny, but now seem to be gaining a better brown colour although still runnyish. She is somewhat interested in food, but it seems to be an effort to eat, and she has drunk nothing on her own today so i gave her some polyaid washed down with a little water. When she does stand she is VERY unsteady on her feet, has no meat left on her breasts at all, and her comb is fairly pale and a little shrunken. Her diet is whole egg fried in olive oil, with added scratch mix, grit, linseeds, and yoghurt with a dash of honey, and polyaid a couple of times per day. i tried her with half a syringe of olive oil yesterday to help lubricate things and get any blockages moving that may be causing problems, but am now at a dead end! I dont know what to do to help this girl! Any advice would be great, Cheers

She may have worms and she is so weak now that standing are walking are a problem. When did you last worm her?

thanks PerthChook, she has now passed, but i noticed a large amount of lice on her upon closer examination, could this have been the issue? I was concentrating more on it being a crop/digestive issue and didnt even think about parasites.. re the worming question, all my chooks are fed a small amount of d,e in their feed, and seem to be doing very well from it, but i also have d,e and dolomite in their dust baths, so i can only guess she wasnt very partial to bathing, which is fair to say, because she is the one chook i never saw bathing! I also gave my pen a thorough clean with malawash not too long ago(hated using it) as most of my flock have been troubled with scaly leg mites, but not the girl in question,so it makes me ask how can lice be an isolated incident when she was sharing a pen with 60 other chooks? If indeed that is what led to her demise? Are there some chooks who just dont bath? Seems odd..?
