Hi everyone.

My little Pekin Bantam is becoming more frail as the months go on. She's not even a year old, yet (33 weeks). She used to be able to jump up to the nesting box, now she finds it hard to climb into the lip of the coop!

Sometimes she''ll be knocked over by the other, larger chooks and be unable to get up. I have previously had a chicken with Mareks, but this seems different. Mareks took down my other chook in less that 3 days. Little Rose has been slowly fading over about a month.

Don't get me wrong, she eats like a pig, she still runs (energetically and in a straight line - no listing) when the grapes and strawberries come out. But she can't jump up and she can't regain her footing when she's fallen down. It's like her legs are getting weaker. When they others free range, she scratches for a bit with them, but then hunkers down to snooze. She's always snoozing.

She's always had a pale comb and she's never laid an egg.

Is there anything I can do? Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Mands

Thanks, Soozorps,

I'm pretty sure it's not Mareks, but it might be Lymphoid Leukosis. I'm going to take her to the Vet in Kilsyth (Vic) next week - the only time I have a day off. Hopefully they'll give me a better clue.

Hate to lose her. She's a little caramel butterball of fluffy goodness. Really lovely nature.

Thanks for your help. I've given her some Poly-Aid Plus to pep her up and she seems pretty chipper. She does get trampled by the others, though.

:(

Well, I lost my little Rose. I'd separated her in her own little hutch and she died yesterday. She had a good meal of strawberries and yoghurt in the morning and she was warm and safe.

I'm going to bury her tonight under a blueberry tree. :(

And I am going to miss her.

There was nothing of her in the end. Her breast bone was like a strip of wire. Poor little girl.

I think sometimes they have internal issues that just can't be fixed like us humans get and all we can do is make them comfortable as possible. I too have had a hen die in very similar circumstances and I did try everything possible but nothing worked

Thanks, guys :)

It's amazing to have a forum like this to post to. Some of my family members were very sympathetic. Some looked at me like I was an idiot. "It's just a chicken." "You buried it? I'd just put it in the bin."

:(

I love this place. THANK YOU!!!!!

Mands

Sorry to read about Rose's death.

Some people just have so very little consideration for other's and how they might feel, chooks are part of the family too!!! You just can'y bin a family member!!! We all need proper closure and a good send off!!! Maybe you can have a service and a wake and celebrate her chookie life?

Under the blueberry berry tree sounds like a lovely place to finally rest.

May Rose rest in peace. She is no longer in any pain or suffering and in Chook Heaven.

Rose was not just a chicken; chooks are people too!!! How can anyone be so cruel and suggest that she be turfed out in the rubbish bin and she end up as land fill!!!

Sounds like the perfect service for a loved family member, feathered, furred, scaled or even human!!!

It is important to farewell those we love and care for in the manner that we feel that they will be remembered by.
