I'm wondering if anyone can help. On Saturday we bought four chicks and they were all fine. That night we put them under our broody who has 3 chicks she hatched and the next day she was fine with them but every now and then we would see our broody pick up one of the bought chicks quite viciously or peck her. We took them in this afternoon after another rough incident, leaving the 3 hatchlings only.

We now have found that one of the chicks has this little red lump type thing on it's bottom, below the vent. We have cleaned it with warm water but not sure what it is, or what to do. The chick keeps pecking at it and so do the other chicks. It was really hard to photograph but of course if anyone needs I will try to get a better one.

Do you think that the mother hen knew they weren't her babies and vent pecked the little one? Maybe it is a sore? Do you have any Betadine to put on it if it is indeed a wound?

Hope someone with more eggsperience may be able to help you more.

Well we know only one chick was being singled out, think it was this one. Possible it's a wound, not sure if we have any betadine but shall ask. Also could it be mites or lice? Just saw something in their box that could have been a mite/lice. Is it okay to dust chicks only a few days old?

Good news Dusty is in good health and mingling with the other chicks.

On a sad note, today, one of our 3 day old chicks was either pecked or squashed to death by Pumpkin [smilie=a_damnit.gif]. Pumpkin rejected the 4 chicks we bought on Saturday. She was pecking at them. All chicks have now been moved to the brooder. We now have 6 chicks, 2 that we have hatched and 4 bought chicks. At least we can cuddle them when we feel like it.
