reading on the vella stockfeeds site it says the coccidistat is regano.
google oregano oil. it says it is good for internal parasites for humans aswell as most animals.
it would be interesting to see how well it works compared to amprolium.
it is hard to go off products that you know do work

My concern is that people will forego proven antiparasitic products for more "natural" substitutes.

If these natural products were that effective, don't you think that they would be used by the multi-billion dollar poultry industry?

If you want to try them, that's fine but to rely on them entirely is foolhardy IMO.

Antiparasitic drugs are only one part of controlling parasites. Understanding their life-cycle and proper husbandry techniques ( eg quarantine, housing & hygiene) are just as important, if not moreso.

And finally, just because something is natural doesn't make it safer. Some of the most potent toxins are natural compounds (arsenic, cyanide etc).

As a wise man once told me: " Everything is potentially toxic if ingested in enough quantity, even water".

My chooks get their chemical wormer either liquid and tablets as per other topic posts quarterly with the change of seasons so I can remember and Apple Cider Vinegar/garlic at full moons, there is wormwood planted near the coop and dried wormwood and lavender where they roost and nest.

I was just wondering if anyone had used that herbal product at all???

are you refering to one particular herbal worming tonic?
the fact we had been 'using' a herbal worming tonic without actually knowing it, i can say our chick survival rate has been good this season. one silkie roo and 2 silkie hens have produced about 50 chicks and the malay roo and 4 hens have got about 35 chicks. all have been reared on chick starter with regano additive. i cant complain about it

I like the idea of all natural but I also wonder just how well they work so never taken the plunge and tried them

Yes the original one as per first post Herbal Tonic WRM.

I used two alternative chemical wormers, Apple Cider Vinegar or Garlic infused water and have wormwood growing near the coops.

i havent used the herbal tonic you have asked about Petite Poulet.
i have always used amprolium.
however seeing a large company has started using a natural wormer in thier products
i am only too willing to try a natural worming tonic and parasite control as i can not complain about the results.
also interested in where to get hold of wormwood plants and also tansy(which is a natural fly repellent)
all the local nurseries do not stock these types of plants or seeds.
before gallus gallus was domesticated he must of used some natural sources to cure his ailments.

You can always ask your local nursery to order wormwood and tansy in. Or try a local market stall selling plants they are also happy to get some in for you thinkerg.gif

Lavender is also good to repel mozzies.

the chooks totally annihilated the lavender we planted.
the nursery people look at you funny when asking for these unpopular herbs.
I suspect they are quietly accusing you of performing black magic.
i'll have to get the missus to ride her broomstick over if they get them in stock for us

Maybe if you see some or know someone you can ask them for a cutting.
