Hi everyone, have a 10 month old gold laced Wyandotte, has had runny poop for quiet sometime but always looked healthy, ate normal looked normal. Last week in the heat she has downward tail feathers, clear runny poop and I also noticed her drinking lots and regurgitating clear liquid onto the grass, which she would quiet happily eat the grass after she was like sick. Also noticed that the feathers looked like they were really dry and crimped...... I gave her a mixture natural yogurt, oats and crumble which she happily scoffed in to her, she had this for 3 days, she has lost a lot of weight but still looks rather healthy, tail feathers are high, happily runs around the yard, always first chook to bed too, can't say she is eating a lot, she seems to just pick. Her poop is still clear, little specks of grass in it but that's about it. She is also regurgitating still.
Wormed about 1 month ago, dusted last week for mites. Bedding is changed on a regular basis. I also think she has been laying soft shell eggs, she does have shell grit available. Diet is generally layer pellets, some wheat every second day, fruit and veg when available, every 2nd day maybe?
Any suggestions on what to do now?

Can't help you with the runny poop but I have a wyandotte that regurgitates when her crop is sour/impacted. Have you checked the crop?
I gave mine yoghurt/rolled oats/garlic mix for sour crop, they love it. My girls have a container of shell grit but I never see them eat it. I now add shell grit to the yoghurt mix to make sure they eat it and my soft shell issue is gone. Not 100% sure how much yoghurt is too much for a chook though. Hope that helps a bit.

Could also have a bad infection of thread worms (caplliaria). Have you wormed recently with a proprietary worming product which covers thread, tape, round worms etc.?

A vet could tell you from a poo sample if you have that problem.

Linz :)

The clear runny pooh is actually urine. This means that she is not passing much in the way of faeces ie she is either not eating much or it is not getting through.

A bird that drinks a lot will often regurgitate. This is because it drinks so much that it's gut can't handle the amount of fluid it is drinking. However, it feels the urge to drink this much because it still feels thirsty ie it's body isn't processing the fluid properly.
Why?
It either suggests that the bird has kidney or liver failure and/or that the gut isn't functioning properly ie the gut motility has stopped. Foreign body impactions can cause this eg balls of grass/fibres blocking the gut OR other diseases are affecting the nerves which would normally cause the gut to contract. Some of the viral diseases, especially Marek's Disease, can do this.

Is your bird vaccinated? (usually done at day old)

I would add some electrolytes in the water ( eg Spark/Lectade/Vytrate) to give the bird some energy and help correct some of the electrolyte imbalances that come from passing so much urine.

Try to asses if the crop is blocked- try to feel for any blockages at the base of the crop. Be careful because when you squeeze the crop if the bird has had a big drink then a lot of this will come out of the mouth as you squeeze.

You can also try some weak fennel tea to get the crop emptying- use this as its sole drinking water until the crop empties again on its own.

Good luck with your girl.
