one of my two chooks ( been laying about a month now)has not laid for the last two days, she was giving me an egg a day. Seems perfectly fit, bright and well and eating fine. She has 'skipped' an odd day before but when its been very hot so Id put it down to the weather. Not hot this week so now Im confused , any ideas why?

I'd say its the heat = I wouldnt want to be laying eggs in the heat
give her a chance to settle once the weather sorts itself out

sometimes some of mine will go off laying if the weather is too hot or sometimes just randomly some miss a day or two... i have 5 girls and at one point was only getting 1 or 2 eggs a day from the usual predictable 5 eggs a day... the last 3 days i have only been getting 4 eggs... one chicken had gone broody and isn't laying but will let the other chickens lay in her box and then push the eggs under herself... hehehe.

Do you find they tend to go more broody when its hot? maybe because they stop laying it triggers the need to sit?

Thanks for the feed back, have figured she is just going to be one of those chooks that is a bit more unpredictable and flighty!, Ive since had a really big egg from her then nothing again. Also in the beginning she was dropping soft shelled eggs at random where as my other girl has been steady and reliable from her first egg. All in all I'm begining to learn as long as they seem happy, lively, bright, than657 alert and wanting food there isnt anything to stress about. Although they have exactly the same food and free range area etc their egg shells are different in colour and I can always tell who laid which, do other people notice the same thing?

Hello Bumblechick,

Yes, you are right about the eggs. Our silkies all lay slightly different shaped and coloured eggs with an added feature ranging from a matt finish to a high gloss.
