Hi All,
I used the search function and looked at all 'bare bum' posts, but (haha) my pretty brown leghorn's bare patch isn't red or inflamed so I don't think it's egg yolk peritonitis? She did go through a phase of laying soft shelled eggs; now she has stopped laying.
She is eating fine and her poose is normal - her comb / eyes are fine and she doesn't have a droopy tail.

I've had the brownies for 7 months and they were pullets when I got them - is this some weird moult? I have only had chooks since May 11, so I haven't been through a moult yet.

Any advice appreciated.

Maybe she is being bullied and the others are vent pecking her? That may explain the feather loss around her vent?

Maybe she has mites? Have you dusted with Pestene her recently?

Thanks for responding PP - is this common? I have't noticed any of the other girls pulling out her feathers... she's been like this for about 8 weeks.
The pecking order has changed though and she's now at the bottom - the others are roosting in a tree and she's sleeping in the coop, but it's been really hot. Would the pecking order change since she's not laying?
Yes to the pestene dusting - I do the coop, birds and dust bowl every 6 - 8 weeks.

That's OK. Hope I have given some insight into the probable problem.

Vent areas and under the wings are often forgotten when dusting.

Vent pecking is common, chookies can be downright mean bullies. May be caused by over crowding in the nesting box.

My ancona has now started moulting - there's feathers everywhere. I wonder if something happened while I was away over christmas. conf665 My inlaws were looking after the girls. I've been discovering eggs all over the place in the yard over the past week.

Ms barebum has a good lot of pin feathers emerging, so fingers crossed she's all good after her moult.
