I also felt putting a chook in a crate was hard, but couldn't get them to stop any other way (consistent turfing out of the nest and placing on a perch at night didn't really work), so in a dog crate they went, one by one. If done early, took only one day. For a persistent sitter over a long time (silly me, will not happen again) it took 3 days. The chooks didn't mind too much.
It took about a week to get them laying again after the broody stage.

Now we have made a special crate from wire offcuts, as I didn't want to ruin my dog crate. The chook has a board to sit on and I move the drums away to make it more airy.

Wow, thanks for the photos - it doesn't look so bad once you see it for real. Mine ended up looking similar.

So, my update.... Miss Broody spent 3 long rainy cold nights outside and the days weren't much better and I released her this afternoon - she didn't race back to the coop and free ranged with the others... went to bed tonight so now I"m just hoping she gets up with the vigor that she used to every morning and then I'm satisfied that the job is done.

HUGE THANKS to this forum, I've got my girl back a_partyguy.gif

I hope it all worked out...... yes i'd like to know if it has already worked too ????

my chicken is still banished to the cage... her time in prison confinement will end maybe tomorrow or the next day IF and only IF she has sorted herself out... we will see... she is one cranky chicken though, being locked out and confined away from the others.

nope.... let her out today because the weather was nice and the chickens were free ranging... she pecked at the grass and when they all walked back in to get the popcorn I threw in the pen , she was back in the box soon after. :(

back to solitary jail for being clucky for her !!!

Sucre is NO LONGER BROODY!!!!!

[smilie=a_goodjob.gif]

But here's the weird thing. I spent the weekend making a naughty box with a wire floor. Took me and my grandfather a couple of days (yeah, okay, I'm not very handy...)

During that time, I locked all the girls out of the coop. Friday, Sat and Sun, I did this and got ready to put her in the box for Tues (Monday was too hot).

I get home and...all four hens are at the gate waiting to come out. Sucre was not on the nest. Buh?

I let them out, and she didn't go near the thing. I worked from home on Tues to see what would happen.

And....she was back to normal.

So I spent ALL THAT TIME (!!) making the box and she stopped by herself!

I'm glad she did, but.... conf665

Anyway, that's my story. Locking her out of the coop for three days seemed to do the trick for her, but I'm keeping that box for next time. It will be quicker and less hassle!

Here endeth the very weird lesson.

Mands

congt334 on completing a wire cage/sin bin.

At least you have had a positive outcome and you have the cage for the next broody, it won't go to waste.

Chooks are so much fun aren't they.
