To be honest I don't know never felt or done an autopsy one a chicken with mareks.
I had a pullet with what I suspect was the skin version it was gross so I just euphenised it.

Glad to hear her head lesions are clearing up. The baytril has done the trick.
You can't usually feel the tumours in Marek's. Even at post mortem you can't always see it but it can be seen microscopically when samples are examined by histopathology.

The virus doesn't affect the joints- it infects the actual nerves so depending on which nerve is primarily affected then you will see different signs. If it's the sciatic nerve, then you will get paralysis; if it's a nerve going to the gut then the birds just have decreased gut motility which sometimes just presents as crops which just won't empty no matter what you do.

And as for the vet's son keeping chickens for a while, it doesn't mean that you can diagnose coccidiosis without examining a feacal sample. Examining a bird's droppings should be part of any examination of a sick bird- otherwise the vet is not doing their job properly. You can't diagnose coccidiosis, intestinal worms, fungal infections etc without firstly examining the droppings under the microscope.

Hi Guys
Haven't been on for a while. All of my Blue Orpys died except for one which was the rooster. Anastasia suddenly got worse and she died in my arms the next day. I went on a camping trip about a week or so after she passed away when I returned( in the afternoon) the morning of our return Catherine dropped dead. Few days after that my last Orpy, Elizabeth dropped dead too. I had a Frizzle in with them at the time, I watched her carefully and put her separate from everyone else yet she didn't die or drop dead. Anyone got an idea about this?? This Frizzle happens to still be alive and she was a sick bird when I bought her.

Sorry to read of all your tragic losses

Maybe the Frizzle is resistant to the disease she carried...

PP is probably right.
If the frizzle was sick when you bought her and all the others have died then she is likely to be the carrier & shedder of the disease.

Only a post mortem exam can tell what the cause was. There are many possibilities.

The best thing to do when purchasing stock is to buy only healthy birds and try not to buy birds from different sources- or if you do to quarantine them separately for at least 4 weeks
& to worm them & treat them for external parasites twice, 2-3 weeks apart during quarantine.

It is also a good idea to buy vaccinated stock where possible.

I am sorry for your losses Chooklover, but don't lose heart.

Hi
She was with no one for abut 2-3months. I don't think she passed the disease for she is with about 10 other chickens and they are OK.
The Buff Orpy I had is dead. Like the other she dropped dead. I swear the lady I bought them from and the healthiest chickens I have ever seen! She was with a Frizzle that is still alive today(she was bought from the same person). The Fizzle was healthy though. Please help! Why have only my Orpingtons died!?!?!?!??! This hasn't happened with any other chicken!!
HELPPPPPPPPP! hide: hide: hide: hide: [smilie=a_whyme.gif] [smilie=puppydogeyes.gif]
Thanks
