My 11 month old RIR has a small black scab on each foot. So far, I have only put Betadine liquid on it. I have read up on how to cut it out and pack it with a topical antibiotic cream such as Neosporin, but don't have any. So, the questions:
1) How do I decide it isn't going to clear up and I need to cut it out? Her feet aren't swollen and she isn't limping, though she walks and runs slower than the others (and has done so since she broke her toe with a hard jump onto rock 3-4 months back). I checked her feet because the last 3 nights she hasn't gone up to the roost, but has slept in the sugar cane mulch on the floor of the coop. She is eating and drinking well and continues to lay.

2) Where can I buy Neosporin cream or similar? Maybe online?

3) In the meantime, I have Triple C antibiotic powder. Should I give this to her?

Finally, is there anything else I can try? I don't want her to suffer, but my husband and I aren't looking forward to our first chicken surgery either.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Bobkat,

I wouldn't worry about cutting it out.

Topical betadine will work fine unless the lesion starts spreading.

You want to know what you're doing before cutting into a chook's foot. If you hit a major blood vessel you may have a hard time stopping the bleeding.

If the lesion gets worse you will probably need something stronger than TripleC. This will necessitate taking her to a vet who knows about chickens.

Just monitor her for now.

Cheers

Parvo

Do chooks only get the bumble feet from hard surfaces like concrete of can they get it from to much time on grass?

They get bumblefoot usually from constantly walking on hard/rough surfaces. Grass is not a problem unless the feet are constantly wet. Nutritional deficiencies can make it worse as can uneven weight bearing due to lameness on one leg.

It has to be said that they do not always get bfoot from concrete floors its only some that may get it. I have 26 coops all with 50% concrete floors and never had 1 fowl with bfoot in over 18 years so it can happen but not always

I have cemented roost floors and like you never had an issue and they jump up and down all the time and never seen this bumble foot I wonder if its more like a horses frog and can bruise from standing on an object?
