The most common cause of bumblefoot (plantar pododermatitis) is a cut or injury to the foot pad usually from a roost splinter of they step of something thats sharp. Bumblefoot is a bacterial infection or abscess of the foot and is common.

Bumblefoot is caused by either long term wear, pressure or abrasions of the skin of the feet.
Therefore anything that affects the underside of the feet can start this process eg wounds or the incorrect substrate; sharp stones like blue metal can do it as can splinters which Loo Loo has mentioned
The reference to concrete earlier relates to birds confined to concrete-only flooring 24/7, not birds which have concrete on the floor of the pens only but have access to other flooring also in runs etc.

If birds are overweight, kept in very confined accommodation without perching or on poor diets then this increases the risk of getting bumblefoot. (The first two situations increase the pressure on the soft tissue under the bones in the foot, restricting the circulation; the diet issue decreases the skin's resistance to bacteria/fungi allowing the infections to penetrate into the foot much more easily).

Also, if a bird favours one foot due to an injury etc, then the foot bearing most of the weight is very likely to develop bumblefoot eventually, purely because of the increased load on that foot.

Penetrating injuries are only one cause of this problem.

Hmmmmm so just walking can cause it as that causes wear conf665

I read on vet sites that as looloo wrote its caused by a cut usually which makes sense
