Hello;

I "accidentally" fed my chickens some moldy unused protein slices (the kind used in sandwiches).

The mold was not severe and only on the outside of the first of five slices.

I have read that feeding moldy food to to chicken "may" cause health issues.

Should I be concerned?

Thank you, Chicken Girl

Hi Chicken Girl,

Mouldy food can contain fungal toxins- called aflotoxins.

These can damage the liver and if eaten in enough amounts cause severe illness and death.

because the damage is caused by the toxin itself, not the fungus, you can't treat it but hopefully a one-off exposure won't cause too many problems for you.

Aflatoxins are what make mouldy bread so dangerous to feed to poultry

Thanks for the information Parvo.

It was only one/two slices for 5 chickens, so hopefully they will be OK.

I guess I'll know my tomorrow afternoon :(

Good to know this kind of information. Thanks, CG

I am guilty of that with my ducks but they have never got sick so I wonder is it different for ducks?
