Hi, we " saved " 3 hens from a property close by. They were covered in lice, which we have treated, and have wormed them once. Two are recovering nicely, putting on weight, still looking a little mangy but otherwise good. The other I brought inside for a while - she was the most underweight and while she looks bright eyed, is fiesty when I hold her and energetic with her feeding, she has a continually drippy bottom, which is red and raw, constantly wet and stinks. I noticed too that she drips clear liquid from her debeaked beak.
Her crop feels soft but is not enlarged. How do you think I should treat her and should I quarantine her, even though she doesnt look unwell (besides the stinky bum).
thanks in advance, Marian

Hi Marian,

IMO you should always quarantine new birds as you never know what diseases they might be carrying, no matter how good they look.

The smelly fluid dripping from the bottom is a real problem. From what you describe it may be a prolapse. It is obviously an infection but the antibiotics you need are only available from a vet. You may be able to apply some aloe vera gel (not creams or ointments) on the raw bits. The over-the-counter antibiotics such as tetracyclines or sulpha drugs which you can get from stock agents or pet shops are unlikely to be effective. You can add electrolytes such as Polyaid, Vytrate or Lectade to the water to help the bird's energy levels.

The beak dripping suggests that the bird is drinking a lot probably because it has an internal infection.

I hate to say it but it sounds like this girl really needs to see a vet who knows about birds/chickens.

Good luck with her.

Cheers

Parvo

Thanks Parvo for your advice. Sad that OTC medication wont help :( You would be able to see a prolapse wouldnt you?
Cant afford vet bills so will give the girl a little more time and cross my fingers and toes.

cheers
Marian
