Post subject:  Sulfa3... Have I done the right thing?

Hello..my three Isa Browns all have runny noses but appear well at this stage so bought Sulfa3 from pet shop..ingredients say...
Sulfathiazole..Sulfadimidine..Sulfamerazine. Forbacterial enteritis, respiratory desease, one eyed cold and Coccidiosis in caged birds.

Am I doing enoug to stop this, i did not want to administer antibiotics if not necessary ..I have read a lot on forum about respiratory deseases but not sure runny noses is same..

Also, what should I use to sterilise pen and ground and dirt to help my girls..thanks for any help? We are in NSW...very warm for May..cold nights but they are locked in roost at night out of the cold..

Oh..and should I stop eating their eggs.....i put med in porridge each day..

You have done the right thing for sure, well done!

The best treatment for ANY health problems is to get it early and you have done that. The sulpha should work but follow the instructions to the letter and if it says treat for 3-5 days then do just that. I would not egg the eggs while treating fowl just incase. Make sure you treat EVERY fowl in the coop and at this stage I would not worry about the coop unless you take them out then you can use a good anti bacterial disinfectant or a cleaner like bleach mix 1 part bleach to 10 parts water

I have used the sulpha in their water and it worked well. I took their water away for 24 hours then gave them the treated water and yep their drank it without any trouble

Keeping them out of a draft is a good idea the warmer the better

Can u buy the supha3 without a prescription from a vet? I mean can you just buy it from a pet shop?

Yes....i live in Port Stephens and bought it from my local pet shop but I chose them because they were bird enthusiasts but I presume you can get it from rural stock feeders and online..think it cost $23...i had best success adding to water and then soaking in bread and watching that they all got a good supply each day....

If the chookies were genuinely sick, then better to medicate them than to have dead chookies. Respiratory diseases can rapidly get worse and decimate your flock.
