Hi everyone. Andrew, the year old boy we bought three weeks ago nearly died with respiratory problems. We saved him with antibiotics and feeding him by hand and all was going well but he seems to have what in horses I would call stringhalt. It seems neurological, falling over with legs awry, wings unco. Do peas get Mareks??? We have him in a small pen and we are feeding him mince steak, egg and otameal and gatorade. He is eating well, alert but falling everywhere. Vet gave him more antibiotics but is at a loss. He will ring his bird gurus this week, but this may be too late!! Hope you all can help. Cheers, Pam

Hi Pam, Sorry for not replying sooner, and Sorry to hear about Andrew, I have not heard of this in Peacocks before but from what you have described it sound very similar to "Staggers" this term is used in Bird circles to describe a bird that seems reasonably healthy but cannot use their legs or stand. It is quite common in Captive Rainbow Lorikeets and is caused by a Vitamin deficiency, in 3 cases I know of, it was teated and CUED with ONE vitamin injection from a Vet.

I hope this Helps & he's on the road to recovery soon?

Thanks

Thanks. We have covered all bases with vitamins I think, due to your advice. Have started handfeeding him again as he stopped eating. Skinny as still but quite strong to handle, just can't use his legs in a co-ord fashion but can sort of spring with them. Lies on his side. THe vet's advice is to support him as he doesn't seem to be sick and hopefuuly someone will come up with something. A girl has emailed me with an offer of vets who breed them in Sydney so I am going to ring them on Monday. Thanks so much for your help. Did I tell you we lost one of our whites to I guess a fox... had a bad week. We are putting the new aviary first on the list. Al is starting it this weekend , and we will get the young ones into the habit of being locked up at night. It is just that we are using their pen for the new arrivals. Cheers Pam

Still hopeless. We have him on Emtryl.... $118 worth for blackhead I have also given him cuttlefish to boost his calcium in case he has zinc poisoning. He sometimes eats by himself but mostly we force feed him. He drinks a bit by himself but we also bottle feed him. He weighs about a kilo but refuses to die. He still can't support his weight. I wish we had some scales that weighed a few grams weight increase as if we knew he was putting on weight we would be encouraged. If/when he dies it certainly won't be from lack of us trying! Al has started the first aviary in the back yard. It is going to be mighty. Did I tell you we lost our white Snow to a bloody fox... not a good week. Thanks for asking. I will keep you posted. How about a name for us to comminicate with. I hate calling you Peacocks Australia. Cheers, Pam.

Hi Pam,
Sorry to hear "Andrew" is not doing to well -- I'm sure it's not from the want of trying ---- hope you have a happy ending, good luck.

Hi Pam, you are really in the "wars" at the moment aren't you? hope your luck changes soon! I agree with Snowball, if he dies it won't be from a lack of trying. As far as a Name, many Forum Members use P.A as a shorten name but if you like you can use my Given name "Brett" We use Peacocks Australia as this is our "Legally Registered Name" (we are not a Bussness) this gives us added security when personel details are not available, unfortunatley in this day and age you have to be very very careful!

Thanks
Brett - Peacocks Australia

Hi Pam,
It sounds like you are trying your best with "andrew". If you suspect blackhead, try give him the antibiotic "batryl". I used it on my turkeys and they pulled through with that treatment. Please let us know how you go, and try to kill that bloody fox, I hate those creatures, they are the bain of my existence.
Matt
