Hi I found this strange egg this morning. It resembled a boiled egg, felt quite rubbery and smelled really bad. It had no shell. I managed to save it before it got eaten as they were pecking at it when I found it. I have 18 hens and no way of knowing who laid it. I have been googling all day but haven't found one simular. Should I be concerned? Has anyone else found one simular? I have 2 Sussex hens about 2 years old. The rest are ex battery hens coming up to 3 years old. I know there is a long list of problems I can encounter dues to breed, age and history. I have lot a few to health issues over the past year (tumors etc) but the remaining girls are happy and healthy. Less than half are still laying. Any ideas would be welcome thanks :)

It is an ovarium cyst most likely from one of the ex battery hens.
It does happen but not very often ,
Not much you can do just keep an eye out for a hen that may go downhill if there are other problems.

Yes it has almost put me off eggs for life! I'm keeping a close eye on the girls. So far all are doing ok. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the info :)

On a side note I did read an article on ex battery hens and ovarian cysts causing 'male' characteristics. Several of my girls have grown large spurs. I found this quite interesting too. I also found a thread on ovarian cysts which had some graphic pics of post mortems but some cysts deffinetly looks like what I found in my coop. I'm worried one or several of my girls may be suffering from these and will be looking for any sign of them looking unwell. It's certainly a learning curb.

Does anyone know how you can tell if your girl is suffering from these cysts?

And how come they just come out like and egg?

I thought cysts are a sort of growth that is attached to something else inside?

Def need more info on this nasty infliction. [smilie=rlp_smilie_207.gif]

It is called a "lash" which is the internal lining of the oviduct and fairly common in older hens and at 3 years for a commercial hen thats considered older.
