Hi there,

I'm worried about one of my hens, Moxie, who has had a swollen face for a couple months now. She is about 8 or 9 years old. I've also noticed swelling of her wattles and feet. She seems otherwise well but is having trouble seeing and will only eat if she has a large pile of grain in front of her.

I've had a look online and am thinking she might have Myco gallisepticum or perhaps chronic cholera. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what to do :( we've had chickens for almost 10 years now and they've never been sick. We currently have 3 hens. The other two are fine. I had a look around the forum and noticed people mentioning Oxymav and Baytril- which one of these will help? I'm located in Brisbane- is there anywhere to buy antibiotics for chickens or will I have to order them online?

Appreciating any help at all!

Thanks everyone :-)

Hi Sandrapoop wave.gif

Sorry to hear about your girl Moxie. :(

You can get Oxymav from vetnpetdirect.com.au on line or you can phone & pick up at their location in Jimboomba.

You need to get Baytril from a vet, which is pretty expensive, but might be worth taking her to a vet by the sounds of things. I bought baytril from a vet & paid over $50 for 20ml  , but I only used 1ml so I have a heap left over as it is really bad stuff for chickens if you use their products for human consumption.

But, if Moxie doesn't lay eggs that you consume anymore then I say get some of that from the vet as it is really potent stuff if you want to fix a problem.

Cheer

Hey Chicka-Dee,

I'm looking at the website you recommended and I think I might head in sometime soon to pick up a bottle of antibiotics. I'm not sure if I should go with the Oxymav B or the Vetafarm Triple C powder. Both seem to be quite broad spec- which would you recommend for Moxie?

Thanks so much for your advice :-)

Hey Sandrapoop wave.gif

I've never used vetafarm Triple C as I got Oxymav for my girls & that has always worked no matter what their ailment so I have just stuck with that, so i can't really recommend one or the other since I have only used the one product, sorry. :(

Maybe one of the other forum members could weigh in?

Don't forget to give us an update on Moxie :-D

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

I have the Oxymav B its good for colds and respiratory infections which I think your chook has and it may have spread I would go with Oxymav B and make sure you do the whole treatment I think its 5-7 days and do any other chooks that have come in contact with the infected chook

You are best to give some direct to the beak at first so mix up as per directions then give a small amount direct use an eye dropper

Hey guys, thanks for your replies- I'm really amazed and touched by the kindness of strangers on the internet! Dad says Moxie has been improving slowly since we starting giving it to her by the beak and we will continue the course of antibiotics till she is back to her old self :) Thanks for your help everybody!! Sending all my love to you all :)
