Hi everyone,
I have had my chooks now for 6 weeks and when I first got them I wormed them with Piperazine solution. Then on Tuesday I noticed small white what looked like eggs in one of their droppings - see photo attached I knew this wasn't right.

From the brilliant information on this forum - I concluded that it was likely to be tapeworm (what do people think?) and when I looked further though the forum I saw that people were suggesting Praziquantel was the wormer ingredient to look for as this is what combats tapeworms (which Piperazine does not cover).

So I purchased Aristopet Worm Enda Plus : http://www.vetnpetdirect.com.au/APWE#.Uc6zBuAryFI
I specifically didn't get the poultry one as it didn't have praziquantel in it as per advice on the Forum.
I made up 1 Litre of water with 25mls of the worm enda then ensured it was the only water source for the ladies for 24 hours.

Sure enough the next day in 1 of the droppings I saw a long worm so I knew I was on the right track.
The product says on the bottle 'not suitable for food producing animals' - so I am currently discarding the eggs to allow for this.
I have a couple of questions:
Firstly - have I done the right thing?!
I am was worried about using the praziqauantel wormer - how long should I discard the eggs for - I read somewhere 2 weeks?
I have also wormed the whole family (I have 3 small children) - and after I have repeated the dose in 2 weeks I will thoroughly clean their hutch - anything else I should do?
Many thanks in advance

Hi 3LL wave.gif

Definitely sounds like you did the right thing [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

I'd say the two weeks sounds like a good waiting period. It will give your girls a good amount of time to try & get some residual out of their system & reduce any any concentrate of the drug flowing through to the eggs.

Obviously the longer you wait the lesser the residual, but it really is a personal choice as to how long you wait, as drug residual in eggs is a touchy subject for some, as some of these drugs are definitely not recommended for poultry producing goods for human consumption, and apparently there isn't much on the drug list that is approved, so we all skate a fine line when it comes to care of our little ladies & whether to compromise the eggs that we eat that they so generously give us each day. :-D

I will always to opt to make my girls better over the eggs as they are my pets and the health of my pet comes first :-D .

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

Definitely tapeworm. Good pick up.
I'd give then between 2 - 3 weeks withholding before you start eating the eggs again.

I use the avitrol plus tablets. so far, so good.

Hey Blak1 - I am interested in the idea of a tablet - these look good. How do you give it to the chooks? I like the idea that you know that each chook definitely gets a dose. How often do you do this?

I find it really strange that so many of the poultry wormers do not combat tapeworm! Is there a wormer out there that covers all worms (including tapeworm) and doesn't have an egg withholding period?
