Hi there...when I nuzzle and cuddle my hens I notice they smell clean, sweet and almost like powder...except daphne..who smells like a cask that has been on a broken leg for six months....

Two weeks ago a strange dog ripped her from her perch and gave her a big shaking but she was uninjured that i could see and I have checked every inch of her body ...no cuts, no scratches...vent clear..eyes clear...looks great...smells disgusting..

Any tips

Any chance she has some chook poo stuck on her feathers?

Clara spent the night underneath the other hens as she went to bed too late and then couldn't see her way to jumping up on the roost, so as a result she got poo all over her. [smilie=rlp_smilie_207.gif] She smelt disgusting for days.

I hoped she would dirt bath it off but no luck she just got worse, so I ended up having to give her a bit of a bath. Not a full dunk under the water but just enough soap and water to aleviate the stench.

Maybe Daphne needs a little bath. But not too much as the other girls will pick on her for smelling different and we don't want to add to her stress levels at the moment.

Food for thought

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

Just thinking there might be some injury from the dog attack. Maybe a sore started off small and has now festered into something. A bath and a really good looking over her when you dry her off might just reveal something. Even a dog tooth piercing/grazing her skin would be very difficult to see, especially when she had such a fright. Maybe there's an infection under her wings. I'd be tempted to give her a bath and dab a bit of betadine under her wings.

Could it also be residue of slobby dog saliva?

Poor Daphne, not only does she stink but she could be stinking of Dog, especially if the stinky dog was chewing a bone or something stinky before attacking Daphne

Mmmmmm rancid chicken wing, yep had that in my fridge before [smilie=rlp_smilie_207.gif]

Don't forget to give us an update once you give her a wash.

Ok..will do....i just read all the instructions for Sour Crop..i am really really scared to undertake this procedure but if, in the morning I feel a large crop then I will do all I can to fix that but really hoping it is just muck on her but I checked for ages...anyway i will know when she wakes as she should have an empty crop if she is well....

No more bread either...i do tend to over do that as i love seeing them go berserk but I read that it is quite often bad for them in large quantity...yeasty and causing fungus in the gut sometimes ....gosh so much to read.....had chooks all my life and never seen such a thing...
