Hi all, I have a hen that has a swollen crop area.
Normally after a day foraging, she would have a full and firm crop.
I noticed today that she was swollen and the crop looked like it was double the size.
I caught her tonight and felt the front and it is soft as if it is full of air or fluid.
It is the size of my open hand. It didn't seem to hurt her, but I know it is abnormal.
It wobbled a bit when she ran or hurried.
I will keep an eye on her tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts, as I know it would be difficult to diagnose something like this.
I will take a photo and upload it tomorrow if I can get to her before she gets outside.
My OH usually lets the chooks out in the mornings. I will have to get him to let me do it.
Cheers
Val

Hi Duckie wave.gif

It's most likely full of water. Sounds like she has sour crop. I found when my girl is getting sour crop she drinks lots of water to try & help alleviate her symptoms. So much so, that when she bends to feed, water runs out of her mouth.

You might notice her breath will not be very pleasant as well.

You will need to empty the contents of her crop by hanging her upside down and squeezing the contents up her throat and out her mouth, then once you have emptied it out (try not to heave your own breakfast [smilie=rlp_smilie_207.gif] ) then give her some yoghurt to help try & establish some good bacterias in her crop?

I know there's a Utube vid out there somewhere with someone showing how to treat a chook with sour crop. I will try & find it and post it for you.

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

Yes I agree its sour crop or crop impaction and yes you need to get the fluids out asap

Warning not a pleasant clip if you squeamish

That's a good video [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

The one I was trying to find was not as good as that.

That poor chookie had a really bad case of our sour crop didn't she. Looked like she had it more than just a couple of days.

I think he should have tried to push more of the solids up & out her throat, rather than just squeezing the bottom of her crop to expel the fluid.

Well I got rid of 99% of the water. Peeew what a smell. The poor girl. I gave her a little bit of yoghurt this morning. Kept her in a little bird cage over night to make sure she got it.
Thank you for all your input. It helped a great deal.

Thank you LooLoo.
I had a look at her this morning and although she looks a little peeked I think she will be ok.
