I would like to talk about Berth
A paper towel roll would love to be so long as her health probs

When I was given Bertha last November along with the other three members of what I called the fab four.

Bertha had a dirty muddy and bare red area between her legs and this was covered in poop. I found out why she was unable to roost so she would sleep under every one else,

I bathed her often and did get her nice and clean the redness did clear up

I think she could have had bumble feet too her pads under her toes were swollen this too cleared up matbe the baths.
maybe bumble feet was why she used to waddle ( the person who gave her to me called her a duck)

When ever Bertha got overheated I also gave her a bath she always got overheated long before any one else.

Berth had also a wheezy snore.

Bertha was very overweight when I was given her she lost weight here.
Bertha enjoyed her dust baths

I asked at the produce store about Biolers and they told me that they can have heart probs too since they are made to grow faster then their bodies are able to handle.

But what was most frighting was when I saw a red mass coming from her vent I was able to put it back in the frist few times and she would bleed from the nose at the same time.

One day in April when I went into the chicken coop I found here thee with blood coiming out of her nose aging I then put her in the storage half of the hen house were no one else would harass her.

She died soon after

I felt like a hopeless chicken keeper
but Bertha was wonderfully natured
after she died I worked out who did the cleaning up after the Isa'a browns around the feeder.

Hey Barnsey wave.gif

Sorry to hear about your Bertha problems. Sounds like my Priscilla when I first got her.

Honestly when you get them with problems all you can do is give them the best quality of life possible.

You didn't do this to her, infact if anything, it sounds like you were her saviour and gave her the best love & care a girl who has come from a neglected (previous) home care situation that she could ever want.

Keep up the good work barnsey [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

Thank you Chicka-Dee

With Bertha it was always the best

I even tried to teach her to not sleep under every one else finally, it was best for her to sleep in her nesting box which was cleaned often.

my goodness we both have a Priscilla how is yours.

My Priscilla (Isa Brown) lay's pinky brown eggs but shes well thank goodness.

Not sure why the other members of the fab four were well and Berta with so many health pros
They are
Good teacher Grace
naughty Ruby
and Henrietta who has a club toe.

The layers pellets they came with was an horrid grey colour and a bit damp nothing like what I always give them.
Only the Isa's now get layers pellets fresh
greens
watermelons
bread sometimes
apple cider vinegar in the water every full moon with garlic
Bird seed blocks

There is also a ( bird safe ) mirror in the hen house which they don't use
They always come rushing into the hen house when I go and care for them.
Love them all.

My "Cilla" was the same. I had to teach her to sleep in the boxes as she kept waking up with poo all over her. [smilie=rlp_smilie_207.gif]

thats pretty cool
My Priscilla (Isa Brown) lay's pinky brown eggs but shes well thank goodness.
oh man I'm so jealous, I would love a chook that laid pinkish coloured eggs. I'm trying to create a multi-coloured basket
Not sure why the other members of the fab four were well and Berta with so many health pros unfortunately it's just random, could be a million reasons, that's why I say you can't beat yourself up. You did your best [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

i heard something bad about bird bells, but I can't remember what it was, so I've never bought them since. Buggered if I can remember conf665 I use Barastock Top Layer Mash, the girls thrive on it.
There is also a ( bird safe ) mirror in the hen house which they don't use what is this for?
They always come rushing into the hen house when I go and care for them. they know who's got the goodies :-D
