Hi Everyone

I have just discovered my chooki has worms. After reading all the different posts about worming I decided to go with Avitrol Plus tablets because its was getting harder and harder to fool her with the Piperazine water solution!

After reading the label it says that I need to withdraw food for 24 hours before treatment and 3 hours after?? I wanted to give it to her now but she has had access to food all day and just had her afternoon tea and is currently free ranging around the backyard.

My question is, does anyone withhold the food or will I just disregard this info?

My other question is that the dosage of tablet goes by weight. I have no idea what she weighs and I dont have any scales to weigh her. Do i just guess? She is a 3.5 year old Isa Brown who is quite healthy, (besides having the worms). conf665

thanks for your help.

The girls

I was told that there was a 10 day withholding period for human consumption of the eggs. I didn't withhold the food as it is too cold.

I've never withheld food and I always use Avitrol Plus now. Doesn't mean that I am right though ;). I thought I read somewhere on this forum that the reason for withholding food is to do with regurgitating the tablets back up. I do weigh my chooks though because I wouldn't even have a clue how much they weigh! I break the tablets in half and slip each half inside a cooked corn kernel and feed one at a time. Even if I drop the tablets directly in the beak, I will often still just place the corn in their beak and they just swallow it themselves - less spitting them back out. But I also only have a few chooks! Gosh, I only ever did a 7 day withhold on the eggs. Guess the kids and I will be well wormed then conf665

Lady jane is right its because they can regurgitate the tablets back up if they have a full crop but its a low possibility and just watch them for a few minutes and you will know if its a problem

Thanks everyone for your help!

I weighed Olivia this morning and she was nearly 2 kgs so I gave her the appropriate dosage of tablets. She swallowed the tablets herself with no problems.

However, I notice that after a little while she was looking a bit ill. She wasn't herself and was just standing around fluffed up a little. Not sure if it was the tablets or it was just a coincidence but she definitely wasn't herself. She was eating and drinking though and when I checked on her at lunch time and then in the afternoon she seemed to be ok. She definitely wasn't any worse.

I just checked her after I got home from work and she was in bed and was chatting to me in her normal way when I peaked in, so I'm hoping that what ever it was has gone and not resurface in the morning.

fingers crossed.

Just a coincidence I suspect as I have never had trouble. If she has worms that will give her a sick looking appearance like you described so hopefully this morning she is happy and live worm free

Thanks everyone!

She's fine. She is out and about doing chooki things like digging up my garden!

Although, as she is nearing 4 years old every time she looks a bit unwell I prepare for the worse. I'm going to miss her more than words can say when that day comes, but for now I enjoy every minute I have with her.

Got to go now because Olivia is at my back door screaming for me to come out so we can go out the front for a look around! ha. Love her to bits!

thanks
