Can 3 year old rhode island red hens catch coccidiosis from baby chickens? or are they immune because they were vaccinated as chicks?

conf665 I have heard adults can get it, but if they've been vaccinated against it, then the theory would be they shouldn't be abe to.

Otherwise what would be the reason for getting vaccinated if your still going to get sick from what you get vaccinated against.

My chickens got it but their mother didn't and she was in the same enclosure but as she wasn't vaccinated against it when she was younger, it could have been a possibility that she could have got the nasty little parasite as well :(

So if any of your chicks get it, separate them from the rest of the brood straight away. Early treatment will help save the infected animal.

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

Possibly if their immunity was low.

Hi Burton,
If there are enough sick chicks shedding enough coccidial eggs (oocysts), if the conditions are right ( a bit moist) and if the older bird's immunity is down then yes even a vaccinated bird can be overwhelmed and get the disease.

However, in most cases, the adults will not be significantly affected.
